Registrars of Voters

The Registrars of Voters are responsible for registering residents who wish to vote.  The Registrars supervise the running of elections and referendums in the Town.  We are responsible for maintaining voter registration records in the State Voter Registration System. We work closely with the Town Clerk to ensure voters, who are unable to vote on election day, can do so through an absentee ballot.  We register students at Nonnewaug High School.

Note: 2026 Canvass Is Underway

Each year, in accordance with Connecticut General Statutes Section 9-32, the Bethlehem Registrars of Voters conducts an annual canvass of active registered voters to determine their continued eligibility.  This includes voters who:

  • we believe has moved within/out of town.
  • have not voted in the last two election cycles

Included in the envelope will be a letter asking for the voter to return the form to us, within 30 days & a self-addressed, stamped envelope to return the form to us.  

If we don't receive the form back, after 30 days voters will be made inactive in the voter registration database.

    • One vote gave the Presidency of the U.S. to Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876.
    • By one vote Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Texas were each admitted to the United States.
    • Thomas Jefferson was elected president over Aaron Burr by one vote. 
    • California and Oregon were admitted statehood by one vote. 
    • Andrew Johnson was saved from impeachment by one vote.
    • The Tennessee legislature ratified the 19th Amendment by one vote, which gave more women the right to vote.
 

Region 14 Board of Education - Special Election (January 7, 2026)

A special election was held on the evening of January 7th, 2026 at the Nonnewaug High School Auditorium for the purpose of filling a vacancy left by Chris Griffin, who resigned in December of 2025.
